Wednesday, 9/28

Had a nice visit with Dad on Wednesday afternoon. Brought him a couple of pairs of pants.  He had a very pleasant dinner with Ted Brett and Joe Taylor, two very with-it gentlemen.

Paintings at Mary Wade

Here are a few of the paintings in the halls at Mary Wade.  They have had a relationship for more than 80 years with the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, which recently conducted its 110th juried exhibition.  These are all on the first floor.

Dad's new roommate

Edward (Ted) Brett
Mr. Brett was happy to pose (but had to take off his glasses).  He's charming.  The bolo tie he is wearing is from squaredancing, he explained.

Saturday afternoon, 9/24

Jo and Dad
Scottish Fudge.  Nice, but not chocolate.

Elevator lobby

Trying to operate the zoom

Still no luck

The rain held off and the garden was lovely.

Dad's floor before dinner

Great gifts

Thanks to Mary O'Gorman for the slippers (perfect fit--very comfortable) and to Priscilla McMillan for the incredible chocolates!

New Haven Symphony Orchestra

First concert of the season last night.  Not only did everything go flawlessly as far as logistics (thanks to the Yale cop at Woolsey Hall who let me park in the no-standing zone while bringing in Dad), it was a fantastic concert.  Dad enjoyed it immensely.  Pianist Michael Brown performed the Beethoven 3d Piano Concerto to perfection.  The orchestra rose to the same level.  Dad and I heard the BSO do it with Radu Lupu last winter, and it was wonderful--this was better.  Apologies for the lousy quality of the shot.

Virginia Magazine of History and Biography

Brought Dad his drycleaned winter coat and some chocolate shells.  He was perusing a history magazine.

Thanks to Priscilla for the chocolate!

Forbes House Museum in the Milton Patch

Nice article on the exhibit opening and annual meeting.

Sheldon Leavitt's Travel Journal

Family members may be interested in my transcription of an 1840 journal by my great-great-grandfather Sheldon Leavitt of his grand tour of Europe.  Some say that Leavitt was a dead ringer for my uncle Jim.

The line of descent works like this:
Sheldon Leavitt m. Josephine Wells
Mary Leavitt m. Henry Ashton Crosby
Josephine May Ashton Crosby m. Allan Forbes
Henry Ashton Crosby Forbes m. Grace Williams Pierce

In the garden

Second wedding at Mary Wade

Trudi's granddaughter Diana and her husband Ryan reenacted their wedding for family and friends (including Dad, Jo and me) in the Mary Wade garden.

From Mary O'Gorman's visit a couple of weeks ago

"What is Mary doing to me?"

Monday 9-12

Dad and I had a nice visit before I went out to Torrington to teach. He has a nice dinner partner, a charming and very vigorous lady who claims to be 100.  I'll try to get a picture.

Service at Mary Wade

Dad and I attended the annual Mary Wade memorial service in the garden on Sunday.  It coincided this year with the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  The service was very nice; my friend Isaiah Cooper sounded the shofar and chanted El Mole Rachamim; the gospel group Salt and Pepper were excellent.  Best of all was the cake at the reception afterward.

Mary Wade Home Facebook page

A lot going on at Mary Wade--check out their Facebook page for the latest.

Ecuadorian dancers

A wonderful local group of young dancers from Ecuador. They did some folk dances by themselves, then grabbed members of the audience to come up and participate.  This is one of the fastest-growing communities in Fair Haven.

Horse-drawn cart at Chatham Square Festival

The horse-drawn-cart tours of the neighborhood are definitely a high point of the festival.  The horses were as interested in Dad as he was in them.

Chatham Square Festival, 9-10-11

Dad, Joanne and I had a nice afternoon at the Chatham Square Festival, a block from Mary Wade.  Dad used a pizza box as a lap desk to fill out his New Haven voter registration form, then decided to hold onto the box.  It came in handy for tapping in time to the music.

By popular request, a place to find out what's up with Crosby

Hello, friends and family,

Some of you have asked for email updates on Dad.  Instead, I'm trying the blog format--a little more informal, easier to put up pictures, and anybody who's interested can log on.  In addition, please feel free to post your own updates from visits, etc.

Best to all,

Rob
